Benefits You May Not Know About

Tuition waivers and auditing classes:

APs can receive a tuition waiver for classes taken on campus. They are, however, a taxable benefit, and those taking advantage may be required to pay income tax on the amount waived. There are several ways to take classes.

APs may apply for and enroll in a degree program. Contact the department or the Graduate College for details on applying.

Those not in a degree program are allowed to enroll in on-campus courses for credit or for no credit as an auditor. To enroll in a course for credit or to audit a section: 1) there must be an open space in the course section, 2) the AP must have the academic background or experience to be successful in the course, 3) the AP must receive permission from the department and instructor to enroll in the course, and 4) if the class meets during assigned work hours, the AP's supervisor must approve.

To audit an on-campus course (undergraduate or graduate), an AP must complete a "visitor's permit" and secure the approval of the instructor and the dean of the appropriate college. The form is available from and should be submitted to the Records Service Center in the Admissions and Records Building. The $15 auditor's fee is waived for academic professionals.

To enroll for credit in an on-campus graduate course section, an AP, or anyone with a bachelors degree, must submit the Division of Academic Outreach's registration form. It is available at: https://www-s.continuinged.uiuc.edu/ao/registration/index.cfm. Registration staff in the Academic Outreach office will then seek the department and instructor's permission. If permission is granted, the staff will enroll the student in the requested course section.
